I just finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. And I even got new icons to celebrate!

I actually read this one straight through, since I hadn't even gone for a speed time on an HP book before. I started at about 11 PM and I finished at around 5:10AM...so it took me a little under 6 hours and 15 minutes.

Overall, I wasn't impressed. I'm sure I could find ten fan fictions depicting the last battle that were ten times better.

I was glad Snape turned out to be good, but that played out pretty much the way most Snape fans had predicted. Big shock. Same with Draco and who RAB was...fandom pretty much called both of those five minutes after the book was out.

The book had some interesting parts, but I got really tired of reading about just Harry, Hermione, and Ron...especially when it involved them wondering aimlessly in the wilderness.

Deaths... I was spoiled for two: Dobby and Tonks. Oh, and Colin Creavy, but does that really count? "Oh, yeah, by the way, the guy that got a ton of attention in one book, a little in another, and none after that? Yeah, he died. Tragic, huh? But that's how those Gryffindors roll." I thought it was a pretty big cop out, though. Based statements I'd heard interviews, I was fairly certain that at least one of the main three would die, and barring that, at least Neville. I guess Snape and Lupin count as major characters, but when they got so little attention in the novel? It really minimizes the impact.

Narcissa surprised me a bit. Kreacher definitely surprised me...and the image of house elves chopping at ankles with cleavers was great.

The epilogue wasn't needed. Or else it needed more. I don't know.

On the one hand, I'm glad I've finally read it and don't have to worry about getting spoiled for it. On the other hand, I understand why I put it off so long. Based on vague comments made by people, I had a fairly good idea that I wasn't going to like it that much. Until I read it, I could at least hope I'd get more satisfaction out of it. Now, though...

Oh, well. This is why we have fan fic.

Also, I've now finished one of my 101 goals!

The upside (imo) to the epilogue: It sets us up for a Rose/Scorpius relationship so beautifully that it seems to almost be canon AND as a fan ficcer I like that I have these almost clean slates I get to play with (goes for the other kids as well). True, some have commented that one might just play with OCs instead, but they aren't OCs, they are canon children of canon characters that we most certainly do know, making it an interesting exercise. I certainly can't wait to finish my current two pending projects so I can try writing some next gen. :)

That's a good point, too. I'll have to check on some of the next gen fan fic and see how people flesh them out. You almost have to wonder if Rose/Scorpius was JKR's nod to Draco/Hermione shippers.

Still, it's a little disappointing that the entire wrap up for the series was "And they all lived happily ever after and sent their kids to Hogwarts." Of course, this probably comes from the fact that some of my favorite fan fic deals with post-Hogwarts years where the characters actually grow into their own.

I did come across a great fan fic line, though. I was trying to see what Snape/Harry writers did with the ending and found this:

"Ah, yes. Neville Longbottom, hero of the hour. I confess I did him an injustice – apparently he is capable of recognising a sword if you hit him over the head with it hard enough."

Now I can start digging around for more fan fic. After I study.

It might have been. I heard that it's actually the biggest fanon het ship. It surprised me, but someone went to a bunch of the biggest archives (that accept all pairings) and tallied the numbers (although, naturally, there must have been some overlap).

I don't know many next gen writers, but drcjsnider is a next gen shipper/writer and she likes to rec stuff, and there are recs on crack_broom as well. :) I think I also joined a fest comm for them if you want the link (didn't really check it out, just joined). I think I pretty much rely on my established rep to get people to read my next gen fic when I get to that point. XD

But have fun studying first. ;)

That does make sense. I think that there were a lot of Harry/Hermione shippers for a while, but that more or less died out. I never really saw it the pairing, but...

Draco/Hermione, on the other hand.... I think that there's a lot of do with that pairing.

I'll have to check that out. I have to admit, I'm a little curious.

Also, out of curiousity, do you know anything about the hogwarts_elite community? It looks sort of interesting and I filled out an application, but I'm not sure whether to actually join and post it or not.

I think the Harry/Hermione shippers are still there. At least I do know some that like the pairing. I'm just not very into Harry and, well, it strikes me as a fluff pairing. It's a bit dull imo. Although, I guess, there could be the whole betrayal of Ron thing, but still. Meh. But that doesn't mean that I diss the pairing or the shippers, it just doesn't appeal to me.

I just clicked that comm and no. In fact, I think it's difficult to even figure out what it's about. XD I checked its member's list and I only have one friend that's a member and two watching (um, let me explain what I mean by that: I may only have 180-ish friends, but they're EVERY-FRIGGIN-WHERE) so it's not surprising that I don't know of it.

I looked at it and the amount of participation they require in order for you to not get kicked out makes my head hurt and apparently if your application isn't "good enough" they "squibify" you or some such. They truly do seem a tad too elitist for my tastes. O.o Idk. I guess it's a matter of tastes. You could always try and see if it's bad or if it's actually engaging enough to be worth it.

Same here. I don't have a problem with Harry/Hermione shippers. I have no doubt that there are some great fics out there, but it just doesn't catch my attention.

That was what gave me pause. The concept looked interesting, but I really don't care for the elitist "Prove you're good enough for us, but understand that you'll never be as good as the ones who were here first" attitude. It may be totally different, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

Generally, when I find myself hesitating to post an application because I'm afraid of messing up, that's a warning to get out.

I'm sorry you weren't impressed, haha.

You need an icon for like "BrooKiki does not approve!" or something. That'd be hilarious.XD

But, I've been thinking more often than not recently, and I'll probably grab the books I'm missing over summer break, and finish too.:)
